The Historic Sixth Loft, located on the third floor of the Historic Ginsburg Building is nestled on historic 6th street just west of San Jacinto street. Built in 1884, The Ginsburg Building originally operated as a feed store, and it still maintains its genuine antiquated look.
The building was purchased in 1936 by Russian immigrants Morris Ginsburg and his wife Fannie Ginsburg, together they ran a General Store and were dry goods dealers. They sold the building in the late 1980’s. The building was used as the site for several different bars and restaurants, until it was purchased in 2001 by reality tv's “The Bachelor” star Brad Womack along with his brother Chad Womack and Jason Carrier, owners of “Carmack Concepts”.
The Ginsburg Building then adopted the name, “The Chuggin Monkey”, which made its name as a live music venue and bar that has become a staple for Austin’s live music scene. After several years of success and a second location opening (The Dizzy Rooster - a block away) the investors took the then second floor of the Ginsburg building, which was being used as a storage attic, and restored it to its 1800’s glory. With beautiful exposed limestone walls,18 ft arched ceilings, gorgeous cedar beams, period style flooring, reclaimed shiplap siding and an ornate chandelier, this newly reclaimed space operated as the office space for Carmack Concepts for both bars, and another of their endeavors - “The Dogwood” bar and restaurant chain.
Out growing their space and success in the Bar/Restaurant industry the Womack brothers and Jason decided to sell the Ginsburg building to Austin local Josh Hazzard, a veteran of the downtown bar scene who has great success running bars such as the famous Lustre Pearl on Rainey street and the Kung Fu Saloon bar chain which now has six locations nationwide.
Since purchasing the property, Josh has taken the formerly owned Carmack
concepts office space and transformed it into The Historic Sixth Loft, the perfect location for any event, conference, get together, bachelor/bachelorette party or work space.
The loft has been updated with rustic furnishings, upgraded lighting, high speed WIFI, three 60-inch flat screen TVs, a private shower/bathroom combo and a small kitchenette that includes a mini fridge and coffee maker.
The Historic Sixth Loft is not only the perfect venue, but also a look into the culture of Austin, Texas, “The Live music capital of the world”.
As you step through the beautiful 14-ft doors of the Chuggin’ Monkey, you will stroll past the stage that has hosted great bands such as Gary Clark Jr and The Nappy Roots, allowing you to step into a bit of Austin’s music history.
You can almost hear the music. Once you head up the stairs past our game room (which you will have complete access to btw!), and out to the patio you will find a staircase leading you to your new loft.
Here you will find everything you need to entertain or impress your guests, all while overlooking historic 6th street!
